Do you have a garden or other piece of land that you would like to make more butterfly/caterpillar friendly? Our garden design specialist, David Smith is here to help. David has a BSc (hons) degree in Garden and Greenspace Design and would be delighted to help you to design your living garden and to devise suitable planting plans to attract the butterflies visiting your area to stay and breed.
The sensitive incorporation of caterpillar food plants and sources of year-round nectar into a pre-existing garden can seem a complex and time-consuming task, involving multiple considerations such as existing light levels, aesthetics, moisture levels, pH levels, soil structure, location of pre-existing butterflies etc.
To make life easier, Caterpillar Food Plants offers a bespoke mail order planning package. All you need to do is to complete a simple site survey form and send it back to us along with photographs of your garden; for optimum results we can send you an optional pH testing kit.
The data gathered will be used to suggest areas that are suitable for new planting, and to create bespoke planting plans to enable you to get the most out of your new plants. The planting plans will cover specific usable areas of your garden - not the entire garden - enabling you to retain valuable existing features and keep costs down to a minimum. The plans are translated into accurately scaled computer aided design (CAD) models which when printed out can act as working documents by homeowners or landscape contractors when physically reproducing the design.
Our planting plan will concentrate on incorporating butterfly-friendly native plants. As well as the essential caterpillar food plants, we will suggest a range of native nectar plants to provide nectar for bees and butterflies and other nectar-loving insects; at the same time providing colour in the garden for most of the year. As already mentioned, our plan will take into account your garden's location, type of soil and amount of light it receives.
To keep the price affordable we provide our bespoke design service online without incurring the expense of site visits.
The use of caterpillar food plants in your garden can dramatically increase the biodiversity potential of your greenspace while at the same time enhancing its aesthetics. The service has an emphasis on affordability but not at the expense of good design; therefore suggestions centre on what you already have in your space, retaining for instance any existing nectar sources and specimen shrubs.

Technical Note (This technical note is not really relevant for homeowners or gardeners who do the planting themselves, but will be of interest to architects incorporating our plans into say a house extension). The designers use a CAD program named progeCAD which supports the .dwg file extension and is used by major companies such as Foster Wheeler, Gazprom, and Boeing Corporation. The drawing are highly portable and can be added to original architects CAD drawings of the property.
Following purchase of our service, we will forward a questionnaire so that you can tell us about your garden or other greenspace.
