Water Avens (Geum rivale) is an attractive native perennial of riversides and damp woodlands and meadows. Its bell-shaped flowers, nodding delicately in the breeze at the end of long narrow stems, consist of five, pale, purple-pink rounded petals, and the dark purple sepals that produce most of the colour. Flowering occurs from April through to September; The flowers develop into a burr-like head of fruit with hooks that attach to clothing or the fur of passing animals.

Habitat

Water Avens as its name suggests is found in damp places, such as pond sides, or wet meadows where it can tolerate a lot of shade.

Biodiversity Value

The flowers are much visited by bees and hoverflies, and it is the food plant of a number of moth caterpillars..

In the long term

Once established you can increase your stock by separating the clumps in autumn, or collecting the seed.

Your Purchase

You are purchasing three well rooted plants in three 7 cm square pots that have been grown by ourselves in Fife from spring-sown seeds.

Plants are carefully packaged in clamp packs made from recycled plastic which is itself completely recyclable.
