Red Campion (Silene dioica) is an ideal flower to brighten up an area of the garden that only gets sun for part of the day. Its pinkish red flowers produced from early spring to autumn, each have five deeply-notched petals.

Habitat

It is often found growing in hedgerows and on roadside verges.

Value to Wildlife

Its flowers are visited for nectar by moths, bees and butterflies and other pollinating insects.

It is a foodplant, along with White Campion, of caterpillars of several species of moth including the appropriately named. The Campion (Sideridis rivularis), and the Rivulet Moth (Perizona affinitata) both of which live inside the seed capsules eating the seeds.

Your Purchase

You are buying three well-rooted plants, in 7 cm square pots. The postage is the same regardless of the size of your order.

In the Long Term

Red Campion is a perennial so the plants you are buying should grow again each spring, with well-developed seedlings appearing at the base of the the previous years stems by mid February, even after a chilly winter like that of 2021. It also produces copious amounts of seed in capsules, that are gradually shaken out by the wind and fall onto the surrounding soil.
