Maiden Pink (Dianthus deltoides), 6 plants in 7 cm square pots.
The Maiden Pink (Dianthus deltoides) despite being a native wildflower is also a very popular garden plant. Its deep green evergreen leaves are narrow and smooth and from June to September it produces lots of attractive pink flowers, with five petals dotted with light spots.
In the wild it grows mainly on well drained neutral to alkaline soil, usually on the coast or rocky cliffs. In the garden, it can be encouraged to flower even more profusely by deadheading. It is a low lying plant suitable for the rockery away from competition from more vigorous species, and does best in a sunny position. As well as the native form, there are also several garden varieties available with flowers of different colours, but the rich pink of the original is hard to beat.
Its flowers are visited by a variety of long-tongued insects in search of its nectar.
You are buying six plants in three 7 cm square pots which we have grown from seed here at our nursery in Cupar, Fife, Scotland. As Maiden Pink is perennial it can be purchased at any time of year,
